PFL v Bellator - Kingdom Arena Riyadh

February brought a trip out to the Kingdom Arena Riyadh to light the massive PFL v Bellator on PPV.

The first major Mixed Martial Arts event in Saudi Arabia - the emerging hotspot for sporting events.

Iconic rock band Heart led by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, reunited for a sell-out New Year’s Eve show at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena. #climatepledgearenaseattle

Lighting and production was a collaboration with long-time colleague Carl Burnett. The design featured a sumptuous sparkling black Austrian drape at the back of the stage and downstage a series of drape clad lighting towers up lit with Robe Tetra2s creating a multi-layered backdrop to the music. 👁️

Large arena shows demand a very bright profile, and when the preference is to use LED - Elation’s Proteus Maximus delivers. Robe Spiiders and Tetra2s offer LED brightness, reliability and the exclusive flower effect, while Elation’s DTW 700s are the perfect LED blinder unit.

Boxxer presents Sky Sports Fight Night

A new all LED lighting rig kicked off the 2024 season of Boxxer/Sky Sports Fight Nights at a packed @mandsbankarena

The brief from Sky was to replace the existing tungsten ring wash with an LED version, but not forgetting all the other considerations of wattage, availability, cost and truck space! 👁️

After much testing, Ayrton’s compact Perseo was chosen for the quality of the colour rendering engine and bright sparkling output. Another great addition is Elation’s multi-faceted Proteus Rayzor Blades, which add dynamic beam and wash effects down the 12 metre long ramp from the stage and a range of different eye candy looks for the numerous ring walks throughout the night.

A RoboSpot system coupled with 2 x Robe Fortes is now used on every fight night. They cover the ring walks, delivering even and smooth coverage of the fighters as they move from stage to ring and giving flexibility for presenter pickups from around the arena. The 8 iconic custom Sceptron drops form the corners of the hexagonal ring truss, dropping down 4 metres to play into camera shots and illuminate the audience.

The end result? Massive savings on energy use. And as the new system is focused remotely from a tablet - it is a huge time saver in the venue and reduces the need for plant hire for the previous manual focus.

This is the start of the LED journey - we will continue to look at improvements to this concept as new fixtures enter the market. #maxconwell #nakedeyelighting

Bridge of Lies Series 3 - BBC One. Quiz show hosted by @rosskemptv

Great to be asked back to light this hit show - a nail biting quiz, where contestants must cross the bridge spotting the lies!

With our return to Pacific Quay Studios, we recorded a combination of celebrity shows for the Saturday night slot - as well as regular daytime shows for broadcast in the new year.

The show was keyed with ETC source 4 profiles which helped eliminate light spill on the set and floor screen.

A range of fixtures lit the various elements of designer Paul Houston’s fantastic set including Robe 100 LEDBeams shooting a narrow shaft of light up the girders, Chauvet R2 washes for a more general spread and Martin Rush Pars as window backing.

After looking at various options, Chauvet Maverick MK3 washes were chosen as the main lamps above the header and replicated on the floor - as the three circles of LED allowed me to duplicate the circular floor graphics at key points in the gameplay. #maxconwell #nakedeyelighting
